Description:
Alan Ball is the creator of HBO's Emmy Award-winning "Six Feet Under" and the Academy Award-winning screenwriter of American Beauty. All That I Will Ever Be is a darkly funny tale of cultural provocation and our eternal search for belonging as seen through the relationship of two young men in contemporary Los Angeles: Dwight, a privileged native Angeleno, and Omar, an enigmatic immigrant from the Middle East. All That I Will Ever Be is directed by Jo Bonney (The Seven at NYTW, the recent revival of subUrbia).

I am a recent 6FU addict. I don't have HBO, so just started watching. Now, of course I am hooked. I am considering investing in the DVD set, but wanted to ask the experts about it - are there lots of good extras that make them worth the $$? I have been able to start watching right from the beginning of the series, so I don't feel I am missing the storyline.....

Crap..., probably so,huh....
So now i get to enjoy the ride from the VERY beginning...
I didn't catch 6FU untill the middle of season 2......

The little graphic elements they've added are chessy as all get out.., but how nice to hear those plantive, echoing notes yet again.........

I just watched a sneak preview a new showtime show called Dexter starring Michael C. Hall, aka David. He plays a serial killer and does that sexual ambiguity thing he hinted at in 6FU so well. All in all I liked it and look forward to seeing it on DVD. Okay, not enough to subscribe to Showtime but enough to watch it.

Season 7 episode 12

The episode before the finale finds Claire distancing herself from Gerald, a model she meets as she has been living in NYC for the past 2 seasons. The episode opens up with her witnessing him shoot a drug dealer while out on the town. Horrified she checks into a hotel where she meets a crazy transexual crackhead hooker named Luscious and Claire goes back to using drugs after 7 months sober. She faces having to testify against Gerald. The whole incident begins to cause Claire anxiety. Claire and David recconect. This brings up Davids past experience with the "red hood"guy. David rushes to NY to help Claire deal with this. David is also emotionally wrought over Kieths reccent admition of an afair with one of his employees at his newly started Security company. Kieth back in LA welcomes his Niece into their home as she has run away from grandparents because her mother died in episode 3. Ruth has a conversation with sarah about telling Claire that she is Sarahs Daughter..... Sarah contemplates telling Claire herself. Brenda is proposed to by Richard and excepts. Nate tells Brenda she can marry....again....and she has a scene where she tosses her wedding ring to the ocean at Nates request.... he tells her "go home." and Brenda does so....and runs into Richards arms. Kieth tells his young black employee who he slept with that it's over and he resist. The employee...Derrick question Kieth and his his choice of partnering and building a family with a white man. And after long intense coustody battle Maggie shows up at Ruths door with her Grandson.. Daniel Eric. Maggie had denied her child was Nathanial for the longest. This was Maggies "miracle"child...after she lost a child a long time ago (if you remember). Maggie tells Ruth she doesnt have long to live.

Most 'Powerful' episode ever ...

Thanks to my local public(are there any other kind,btw....lol) library i'm re-watching the first season, which i had never actually caught. I didn't start watching, or getting intto 6FU, until around the end of season 2....

Knowing how attached i became over time, it's so interesting to see how the show has dveloped...
What 'tricks' and aspecs it 'let go' of (those thin, silly-ish advertisments for funerary products...), but also how it REALLY became an amazing exploration of the same few charecters it had at the outset.....

I am struck by the episode titled "Familia" .....

Absolute usual genuis level mix of all the best ... i wound up laughing as tears rolled down my cheeks ...
It just strikes me sometimes how insightful some writers/directors can be with the charecters they use....
How David was impressed and changed by his 'interactions' with the dead Paco...

"Familia" has pretty much jumped to the head of my fave episode list...
What 'sodes head your list ...?

Every so often, I get reminded of the rapture/blow-up-doll death scene last season on 6FU. A scene such as this perfectly shows why I love this series so much, and why it will be so missed.

What's everyone else's opinion of the best death scene that started the show each week?

My fave parts..

1. Momma Fisher playing with the wind outside her window with her hand....

2. David seeing Kieth stop a car in the uniform of his old job....

3. Rico watching a car of him and Vanessa go by as the used to be..., happy....

4. Poor Brenda not even being able to START her car.., until it seems she just relaxes a lil' bit....

Just finished watching the 3rd season again.....

I have liked several shows over the years... But i REALLY can't think of any that affect me and made me REALLY FEEL , like this show...

I MISS not having NEW things to hear Claire and Nate say and experience and DEFINITELY miss Kieth and David (just about the MOST real depiction of gay dudes that i could relate to EVER)...

Anybody read or know of any essays or critiques that examine this show on an interesting 'egghead' kinda level... ???

I'm dying to know what 'it' was about this show that clicked for me so much.....

It's gotta be more than just the 'realness' of the cahrecters(altho i CAN'T think of any other TV charecters that seemed MORE real to me...)..., and the death at the beginning gimmick wasn't even a constant....

I'd like to read something by someone smarter than me about 6 Feet... Anybody know of anything anywhere ...?

Or just tell me what YOU think it was about this show that resonated so strongly for YOU.....

I STILL cry and am put in a highly introspective, reflective mood for DAYS when i watch the last 10 mins of the final episode.......

I posted this a while back but i start a fresh new thread.....

Spin off ideas?

~I always though Claires Art school chums should had their show. Which art school has never been the sole setting of television show. Anita, Russel, Jimmy and the rest of the gang. Add new characters...you have yourself a show.

~Father Jack. Take him....focus an hour long dramady on a Catholic Church and the people who drift in an out. Center it on faith and new characters who attend the church. Add in two major families who are polar opposites attending the same Church Father Jack presides over. Add in some neurosis...drama...sex....homosexuality....drygs.... you have yourself a provocative tv show.

~Birth... how about a show that is six feet in reverse. Centers around a hospitals delivery department....open up every scene with a new life and we follow their lives ....... major characters are doctors..... the same hospital Nate died in. First episode takes place on the night Nate died....and the doctors involved.... or maybe ties in Willas birth.

OR better yet...

Give Rachel Griffiths her own show....her life post Nate...raising Maya and Willa alone......

Your Turn.

My interpretation of the last part of the show is that all the deaths were just Claire free wheeling imagining all these possible demises for entertainment while she drives. What got me thinking this way was Claire at the end on her death bed blind. Only her ironic turn of mind would fashion this somewhat poetic outcome for herself.

Re-watching the 3rd season, and for kinda the first time really starting to appreciate the charecter Claire.

While 6FU was running, i spent alot of time somewhat(not actively, mind u) disliking alot of Claire charecteristics....
She was often striking me as way too selfish and self absorbed, and somehow just kinda whinny.....

But somehow now and lately, she's actually become a favored charecter of mine.....
Theres really always been alot more to her than i was seeing before...

BTW.., did she ever tell anyone about het abortion..? Can't remember....

Ted = Jar Jar

My roomate & I finally just finished the final episode of the fifth season of our beloved Six Feet Under.
A show which, despite some flaws I intend to detail later, has been an unforgettable pleasure in many regards, the least of which NOT being exeptional writing as well as exemplary character development.
It would be a *grave* understatement to say the series has moved me.
Nate Fisher damn near became a role model for awhile, nearly prompting me top craft a line of bumper stickers which read "What Would Nate Do?"
I could continue to extrapolate on the finer qualities of this show which we love so much, but, that doesn't make for very spicy type, much less explain why I've chosen to opine, online, with a few, well, ONE major problem I had with the series.
So now that I've substantiated my commitment to our dear TV SHOW, in addition to kickin' down with some 25 cent words, here goes.

TED really, as in <<REALLY>>... Sucks the BIG ONE.

He damn near ruined the entire series for me and here's why.
Calire, gets mired up in a bullshit office environment rife with innuendoes and surface catch phrases, a place where, if the development of her character meant a thing, she should have shuddered the biggest *ICK* the world has ever heard and run for the hills with the echoes of "Yeah babay!" drowning in the distance.
But instead, she sticks around for abit, and ends up fucking the lowest scum on the planet. Even lower than insurance agents. A lawyer.

Suffice to say, every appearance of Ted, even the mere mention of his name began to elicit grudging moans as the series ran out.
Sure some say that Ted was a great guy for hanging around during Claire's moment of strife, but does anyone actually believe that this frat boy was really there for anything other than to get laid??
It seemed more the case that the second Claire was in distress, Ted appeared to have hit the jackpot. He was REALLY gonna get laid then.
A despicable turn of events. I mean, this is the worst thing to happen to cute red-heads since Sixteen Candles!! It's an oturage!! AAgghhagagahh!!!

But seriously though, I was just mentioning to my roomate at the start of the final episode, how SFU sholdn't end. All they needed was to introduce some glib, incidental character to the mix to milk another couple of seasons out of it, y'know, like The Great Gazzoo on The Flintstones, or Poochie The Dog from The Simpsons, and that's when it hit me.
TED is that incidental, worthless, tumor, extra appendage excuse for a character.
It's quite obvious that he was written in very late in the game as a sort of consolation prize to the Red States. Like their ratings dropped for Aunt Sarah's comments and this was a sort of obligatory bone they felt they should throw out to the very confused republican types who had watched the show for years only to vote against gay marriage in record numbers.
What do they matter?

So Ted only gets worse when he gives Claire the CD labeled "most unhip CD ever" or something to that effect. This, from a man whom has freely admitted his affinity for really bad top 40 as well as contemoprary christian rock.
This CD does not go straight to the garbage. It does not immediately become the coaster it was burned to become.
No. This CD lurks in the shadows until what moment? That's right. The most important part of the ENTIRE FIVE YEAR SERIES!
The final retrospective is scored by the musings of an admitted tasteless man.
Granted, the music wasn't bad. It ended up being quite good. But knowing what it was from the moment Claire put the CD in, I was on edge the entire time, waiting for the voices of Rob Thomas, DC Talk, Shania Twain, or fucking Scott Stapp to come oozing through the speakers.

All in all, I hate Ted because his character was created with more demographics in mind than that of the characters they had so painstakenly crafted for so long.
Much like Jar Jar Binks of Star Wars infame, he was an entirely unecessary, unwelcome addition to an already solid cast and plotline and he damn near brought the whole thing down.

That is all, thank you and goodnight.
Feel free to commence with the standard character assasinations and grammar fascism inherent to the blog-o-sphere.

Hello everybody,

I was watching a re-run of SFU the other day. I think it was the first episode of the fourth season. In any case, the "previously on Six Feet Under" segment where they showed what happened in the previous season was extra-long and was giving me chills to watch it again.

I then realized how much I missed hearing that song in the background during those scenes.... with the gangly guitar part and the the electronic bass and drums underneath. Does anyone know who the artist is, or where I could get a copy of that track?

The show's over, it's not coming back.

Ever.

And we are all still here.

I was thinking about this last night. I really miss it. When Carnivale ended, I left the tribe. But I just can't dump this one. Why is that?

I was an addict of SFU and still have to wait 1 month to see the last season...ARGH!!!

OK. When I discovered SFU last winter, I became an addict. I watched the first 4 seasons in less than 4 weeks. See, I had to rent them because I don't have cable or satellite. So I haven't seen the last season yet. It comes out in DVD at the end of this month. God! I have been waiting a n entire year to see the last season. I have to say, my favorite season was the second season. The third season was not as impressive but I guess they had do do a lot of character development to get to the next level (Season). Any of you share the same thoughts or different ones?

Why not?

The first season was a masterpeice. Nothing will ever top it. It was very edgy and raw. The deaths were all shocking and often horrible. The Fishers were all out of wack from the very beginning from Nate Sr.'s death. Brenda was a deep, deep mystery. The ongoing takeover from the corperate mortuary company kept things interesting.

Second favorite season? The last.

Third favorte? Second season.

The other seasons were sort of forgettable, IMHO.

So they say that movie Rumor Has It is about The Graduate. Truth be known, it is simply and truly about SFU. So obvious: 3, yes t-h-r-e-e SFU actors are in it. Nate senior- and he's not this ghost dude anylonger, he's a living breathing mofo. Then there's Claire's lezzy lova- mena suvari doing the worst acting job of her life. She was so much better as the hot lezzie. Then there is Bettina, with a 2 minute cameo and platinum hair.
Those hollywood foo's be clever. They make a movie proposing to be about a movie from the sixties, and secretly- but obvious to us sleuths, everything leans towards SFU. Awwwwww

ok so I just bought one of my favorite movies on DVD-"Clueless"-and while watching it last night I noticed that one of the characters is played by a VERY young Jeremy Sisto....the Last time I watched Clueless I didn't know who Jeremy Sisto was, so it was kinda funny to see him pop up....If you need your Billy fix, and a very cool movie to boot, check it out!

ON a sidenote-I noticed that he was one of the only people from the movie not to participate in the extras...hmmm....perhaps he was too busy wrapping up SFU?

... the final 15 minutes

I became almost instantly addicted to 6FU as hands down, the most original, thought provoking and "real" TV series I've seen. I spent the past few years thoroughly rapt with a wonderful combo of laughter tears with each ensuing episode -- and thrown into a depressive state if I missed one -- the final 15 minute montage was so dissapointing as Claire's drives to NYC intercut with a montage of key players fast forward rap up. It was nothing but a slick but pat commercial TV denouement.

I've not written in hear in while simply because I had little time to read all the great posts -- and was too flooded with emotions with too damn much to say about it all. But this last 15 minutes was the only cop out in a stellar series. Between the cheesy aged make-up, unmemorable hackneyed situations (Ruth looking like a hag seeing Nate from her hospital bed, George sobbing, Keith getting shot in an armored car heist...oh please). It would've been better to fade to white with Nate doing the iPod switch dance or whatever that was. Completely and totally forgettable.

There, have I stirred things up at all?

Series Retropective:The Characters

Hold on. This Tribe isn't dead yet. Actually there's an after life i believe, now that we have been apart of the last 5 years of the Fisher's, The Diaz's, The Chenowith's and George and Maggie Sibly's lives, we can reflect and gain more prespective, hence hindsight is always 20/20. It's like you've seen the event open, slowly unfold and then close. Now let's share insight into the characters of SFU and what we learned from them.

___________________

Brenda: I think Brenda appeals to the element inside of us that is deeply damaged and scathed, but extremely aware of that and wants better. The part of ourselves that struggles with insecurity and has trouble believing that we are deserving of more than what was handed us. Brenda was quite fortunate, in a sense she grew up with parents who made a more than decent living, but she was exposed to too much to fast. Prehaps she even felt she had no real childhood and prehaps that fueled her desire for children later on.

Perhaps she clung to Billy and vice versa because in being rather sheltered in terms of their upbringing they both found solace and understanding in eachother. The nuerosis they felt they were given by their parents could'nt be understood by anyone dating them, or befriending them, readily. Billy sought out the art world as he way of personal connection, and Brenda found friendships with people somewhat on the frindge like the the high class call girl, and found understanding and freedom from the alienation that hovered over her head. Surely people like drugs addicts and Prostitutes would understand me?

Brenda addiction to Betrayl and hard time maintaining relationships of the closer kind were a direct result of the alienation her childhood bred. She sought sex with strangers and drugs as an attempt to connect through disconnection and it caused her more bruises. And she wanted out of that.

Claire's "fantasy" or Not....let's reflect and speculate on how all the other characters Died.

As I imagined in another thread Russel dies a woman, He names himself Claire after his sex change and Marries a miserable Anita, who goes onto porn after failing in the art world. Anita and "Claire" raise wild apes in the San Fernando Valley....Three of Anita beloved apes tear her limp from limp and eat her in her kitchen, when transexual Russel finds her, and take pictures of the blood bath. He becomes famous on Anita's demise and dies later from an infection due to his ruptured implants. He stalks Claire in sporatic episodes throughout his carear as an eccentric scupture/photographer and writer.

Anita ~1982~2027
Russel/"Claire"~1983-2059

_____________________________

BRENDA"S FACE OFF WITH LISA

After her wedding Brenda goes to pop a pill and knock back a full champagne glass, She engages in a stand-off with a dead woman.

Lisa: ".....It all came very naturally to me, Because i was always Maternal. Unlike you..."

Brenda: "I'm fucking maternal."

Lisa: "Oh come on. I mean, look at your past."

Brenda: "What about my past?"

Lisa: "You're a slut Bag. Well, You were."

Brenda: (Matter of factly rolls her eyes and shrugs) "Thats got nothing to with it."

Lisa: "Of Course it Does. All the moments of your life have lead to this one. You're being punished.

Brenda: "I don't believe in that."

Lisa: "Your insides must have gotten Damaged from all that announymous cock. Oh Come on. That's why this Happened to you."

(elapsed time in conversation...Lisa points out various wedding guest who are pregnant and have children. Lisa gloats on the wonders of motherhood, Taunting Brenda, to which Brenda replies......)

"I'm gonna get my baby, Bitch."

Had to be said.

But, for those of you who have Comcast On Demand.

Cc has heard a rumor that sooner, rather than later, CCOD will begin showing all of 6FU from the very beginning.

In their usual series of 6-8 at a time, of course.

Cheers~!

ps~

I still miss Nate

i saw Kieth on Fox!!!

ok not exactly Kieth....Mathew St.Patrick. on the premire of a lame "teen" drama called Reunion. He'll always be Kieth to me, Lauren Ambrose will always be Claire.... and the rest.

It's great to see he jumped straight onto another project. He was playing a COP AGAIN. So In watching the show, I just imagined this was Kieth, in another demension, rejoining the force as a detective solving a case backwards. The show isnt really good but i'm oddly compelled to watch and brainwash myself into this convienent fantasy. It helps. *sniff*

Anyone watching Weeds on showtime? its a pretty good drama. Its about a widowed suburban pot-dealer. Of course not as good as SFU, but a decent drama to watch each week with a basis in the taboo.

letting go

I find myself in stages of actual grieving for this show. First stage shock, detachment, a second stage tears....I'm utterly surprised and then another round of sinking in, disbelief "I can not believe a show this good will not grace our TV screens anytime soon. And then this morning was surreal because I had an actual dream involving SFU, that was quite stirring.

It involved the house I grew up in. It's no longer in possession of my family and sometimes when I'm in the town I grew up in, I will pass by. Many happy and sad childhood memories live there in that house.

What I remember of the dream is that there was a going away party, various friends of grandmother and mother, grand dad all in attendance walking up the drive way as I sat outside on the front lawn ..............with Claire Fisher and her stuff in her lime green hearse. We cried together and held onto each other. The people leaving, all people I've known, some people as I remember I had not seen since I was a kid, waved goodbye to us and drove off. I remember begging Claire not leave with me...and I went inside my house and got objects that were mine, specifically a Bow of my note books that I kept when 14 and wrote kiddie poetry in along with homework I never turned in. I gave her that box with my favorite magic 8 ball. It was like I was giving her pieces of myself. The house was empty....I remember wind, and the last image was the lime green hearse actually deconstructing, it's hood and doors flying off. Until it was stripped bare. She said....."I gotta go before I can't drive my car anymore." Sorta got wizard of OZ ish.

I woke up frosty, clinging to that dream and I've been thinking about it ALL day.I've my Freud and Jung books on dreams out.

hehh. Wow.

anyone else having problems, letting go?

So I came home last night and flipped the channels....damnit if the last episode wasn't on!!!! I was doing so well too, slowly returning to normal after being so sad all week. Anyway it was the scene where Ruth is at George's apartment and she's asking about Maggie....George responds in that condescending way of his, and Ruth goes "Now George, don't talk to me like you're my father!!" and later tells him that she can't move in with him cause he has all those walls around his heart...I was so proud of Ruth telling George (in a roundabout way) to go to hell!

Then came the next scene where David, Keith, and the boys were at the dinner table and david was saying thanks for the boys coming into their life, and I just lost it.....waaaaaaaa......

I'm not sure if you're aware but for those of you in San Francisco/Bay Area they are carrying props for the show at Out of the Closet at the South of Market location including the Fisher fridge and sofa and so on. I was just there today and got a set of plastic tumblers. Now you too can own your own little piece of the show. And it goes for Aids research.

Probably plenty of speculation has been had on this subject....was Maggie pregnant? Was that why her final scene was in a doctor's office?

Simply a what if argument at this point...maybe that plot arc hit the cutting room floor.

Ultimately I am glad they left it alone...Maggie pisse me off anyways

You can get all the music from the last episode (I think) off of Itunes for 12.99. It includes Breathe Me which, because I still haven't taken the time to learn filesharing, is not really available. FYI

At Clair and Ted's wedding, the youngest of the adopted Fisher boys is holding hands with another man who is Asian. It was probably the younger one. The olde one appeared to take over Fisher & Sons.
Also, while some call David and Keith's ceremony a "union", in California with the current court batttles,Ii interpreted it as a lawful wedding set somewhere in the near future. Since Alan Ball is gay and the ACLU with Alan Ball in attendance held a party at Forever Hollywood, the cemetary where a lot of it was shot and close to the Sunset Gower studios, I am sure he interpreted that way. California does not have unions. It has Domestic Partnerships and only notaries can enter them for a gay or lesbian couple.

Perhaps it is just because I'm a Jackson Browne fanatic but I LOVED their using "Doctor My Eyes" playing in the background while Bettina, her daughter and Ruth were drinking wine and trying to decide what Ruth should do with her life...

That song, if you know the lyrics, is perfect for Ruth...and her finally awakening from her self supression.

This series was brilliant with it's musical choices...again and again...

"My face is coming off." Davids line was excuted with this soft brutality. I became sort of unhindged then. This episode was exactly it's title. Static! The fall out after Nates death was far reaching indeed, pushing each and every character back notches. Alot of scenes were emotionally difficult to watch.

Claire nearly died, and walked out of crash (that would killed anyone else if were located in the first 2-3 minutes of show) unscathed. I didnt even count a scratch or visable bruise. I argued with my mom after the show about Brenda keeping Maya. I think Maya would only become a casualty of Brenda's darker corners and Nate's mistakes.

Okay, I have a thought...

At the end of "All Alone" Brenda is in all black and falls into BIlly's sympathetic lurking arms...
When "Static" airs she has the dream about her and Billy and she is wearing all black in the dream when she walks to the bed to sit down...

So when Brenda was dreaming was she remembering an incident that really happened,
(now I'm not saying they went further than what was showed in Brenda's dream nor am I assuming they didn't go any further than what was shown in the dream) or was it just a dream caused by Nate's words to her in the elevator...

set up:

the scene where david has told the boys he put the pizza under the broiler to cook the cheese -- his ptsdfantasy of door pounding and subsequent breaking in of narmnate stabbing the older boy.

when david finally gets back to reality and starts yelling at the boys who are telling him the pizza is burning. keith comes in wanting to know wtf is going on.

hysterical moment:

carnival music (from the tv) playing and david does a 'doh!' double take.

too fucking funny.

god i am gonna miss this show!

I had read an article in THE WEEK magazine around the time they started filming this season that said there was a special guest on the last episode. They had asked Bill Clinton to do it, but he apparently wanted too much money. So, they started looking to find another *special guest* to appear in the last episode. Does anyone know if they found someone else? Rumors, etc?

ok. iknow with all the super heavy shit thats going on right now in the show is hard to ignore. but this is a post to ponder something lighter and a little odd.
the opening credits have always been beautiful and lovely and well thought out. but tonite when i saw that part at the end where there's the tree in the field and then the line goes straight down to make a little box around the title "six feet under" then the words disappear and the tree shrivels a dn disappears. now ive watched this every episode for the past 5 years but this time i thought of nate in the ground under (or close to) a tree. i thought to myself, wow, i wonder if allen ball new this whole time that nate (representing the spirit of six feet under) would die and be placed under a tree and eventually even the tree will die and there will be no marker no nothing. its just gone. do you guys think that symbolism was thought out way ahead of time (5 years ago) or is it just a coincidence?
like i said, my brain needed a break from digesting this last episode, so bear with me...

Okay folks - no real evidence that the following is true-
I came across this while scouring the internet for anything at all about the rest of the season.
Stop here if you don't wanna know!
*
*
*
*
*
*
*
*
*
*
22. I've viewed the series finale and can confirm the following:
1.) Maya is being raised by Ruth while the truth about Brenda is reiterated (She had an affair with someone after she lost the child in the first half of season five---this must've been brought to light in the second-to-last episode. The baby she's carrying isnt Nate's!!!). Ruth reconciles with George.
2.) Maggie is pregnant with Nate's child (It will be a boy)
3.) David complies with Nate's final burial wishes.
4.) Claire finds happiness with her lawyer friend and continues a relationship with him.
5.) Rico and his wife reconcile. Rico accepts the business as a whole while David becomes a silent partner.
6.) David and Kieth formally adopt the children.
7.) Nate appears to each major character and says his emotional good-byes to each of them.
I've skipped a lot of other stuff. Including the heart-felt farewells between Nate and all the other characters---it isn't tantamount to anything ever written by Alan Ball. (He's been quoted as saying that he cried while writing it and that the characters cried themselves while filming it) Definitely a "NOT-TO-BE MISSED" episode. It couldn't have ended any better.

so after mulling over all the obvious craziness of last week's episode, i started picking apart the tinier crumbs. what was nate saying when ruth saw him in the dream? was he talking to his dad? I thought he sadi something like, "what did it feel like when you figured out hwere you were?" something to that effect. like maybe he was asking his dad what it felt like for him when he realized he had died. nate seems at peace. that all he really wanted all along anyway. im glad he finally feels relaxed and chill.
but what about...

ruth?
- fuck man. shes still in shock i think. the preview with her freaking out "WHERES MY DAUGHTER?!?!" haas me concerned moreso than before. she's already cracked, what the heck is she gonna do now???

david?
- i know things seem all peachy keen in their cleaver/no beaver household but i have my suspicions about the dude who "babysat" them when keith ran out on one of his bitch errands. its clear that guy is a sick perv. why doesnt anyone question his intentions with the boys? and with keith, things dont just go from violent bullshit to happy huxtable dad. he aint no cosby, thats for sure. and poor poor victimized david. the poor guy has lost any masculinity he ever had. hes such a ninny now and he needs some help. c'mon dave, ask someone for help. please.

claire?
- i am confused on the clair front. i dont trust lawyers. russell tweaked beyond belief. gross. and of course theres billy. (id give her shit about bad choices when it comes to dating the insane, but I'm not as innocent as all that anyway. ) she had her mouth hanging wide open the entire episode so im not sure what to think. especially if she goes missing....

brenda and billy?
sittin in a tree, k-i-s-s-i-n-g. they can have each other for all i care. i mean, they already did, right? just get sweet maya out of their picture. please. someone better step up to the plate here. the fischer's are dissolving...

Rico and his wife?
i just dont think it will work. even with nate's death, once a cheater always a cheater and she knows that. plus rico was gettin hot fixin up that dead mexican girl anyway.

thats my take. If i was nate, id feel relieved to be on the other side of all that too. no wonder he's finally relaxed.

My sister, whom i adored and who is also dead, used to quote a line from this film to me regularly. If you've not seen TLO - I think you'll enjot it.

I thought this had been done, but I couldn't find the thread in the archives, so...as the series comes to a close and we say goodbye to the Fishers and their satellites, what was your favorite episode, scene, whatever from the last 5 years?

I just had a reminder of how amazingly poignant the yard sale bonfire was.

Oh, and by the way, if you get a chance to see the *Cut by Cut* short on the 4th season DVD,(or on Demand, if you have it) watch it. The editing in this series is impeccable.

Short of living in san jose and grieving with us what are you all going to do that night?

Ruth AKA Frances Conroy

Just saw the new Jim Jarmusch film "Broken Flowers" last night....it was fabulous. Anyway, Frances conroy plays one of Bill Murray's ex-girlfriends, and she was just as whacked as Ruth but only more of a "perfect wife" living in a perfect white sanitized house....HA she was great!

here is an interview cut and pasted from salon.com. viewing requires a premium membership so i thought i would share with y'all:

Scene Stealer
After making Claire Fisher the most achingly realistic young woman on TV, we can't wait to see what Lauren Ambrose does next.

- - - - - - - - - - - -
By Lori Leibovich

Aug. 10, 2005 | The cast of HBO's "Six Feet Under" is among television's most talented, but still, Lauren Ambrose stands out. Part of it is her luminous, Botticelli-like beauty. But mostly it's the way she imbues her character, Claire, with layers of vulnerability and a mercurial complexity; just as quickly as Claire can slay someone with a caustic one-liner, her pool-blue eyes can well with tears.

The frequently tortured, brutally sarcastic, unlucky-in-love youngest member of the Fisher family could easily be played as slacker caricature. Over the course of five seasons, though, Claire has consistently evolved -- she's searched for her identity in art and in men, tried to make peace with her family's gloomy business -- and yet she hasn't always moved forward or learned from her mistakes. No matter how much she wants to be treated like an adult, she can't seem to forsake her adolescent poutiness.

Ambrose, 27, grew up in New Haven, Conn., the daughter of a caterer father and design consultant mother. She attended Catholic school, had roles in several off-Broadway productions, and studied piano and opera -- even singing arias at weddings and, yes, funerals. Ambrose has had small roles in a series of teen movies ("Psycho Beach Party," "Can't Hardly Wait") and a starring role in the 2000 independent film "Swimming." She married Sam Handel, a photographer (whose photo of his wife accompanies this article), four years ago.

In the final season of "Six Feet Under," Claire is dealing with three issues that have dogged her since the beginning of the series: sex, art and family. She has dumped her live-in bipolar boyfriend Billy, had a one-night stand with a friend of her older brother, Nate, erupted at her mother, and reluctantly taken a temp job at a law firm, where she has entered an unlikely relationship with a young Iraq-war-supporting, pop-music-loving Republican lawyer.

Salon spoke with Ambrose by phone from her Los Angeles home two days after she finished shooting the final episode of "Six Feet Under" -- and before the broadcast of this season's big surprise. As we chatted, she packed boxes for her move back to the East Coast.

So, you just finished wrapping the show?

That's right. The day before yesterday was the last day of "Six Feet Under" shooting.

How do you feel? Was it emotional?

Yeah. We've all been together for a long time and have strong connections to each other. It's going to be such a strange adjustment to not see those people. After five years, the show has become our lives.

Actors always claim that it was "just like a family on set." Was that actually your experience?

There are some people that I've developed really close relationships with, but mostly it was just a really great place to work -- a really great job. And it's just strange that the job is over. It's not like leaving a job where you can go back and visit the office and people are still there -- it's just done. Everyone scatters and goes off and does different things.

Does it feel like the right time to end the show?

Well, it really doesn't matter what I think. It was Alan Ball's choice to wrap things up this year, to find some closure and bring it all to an end -- and thereby that makes it the right choice, because it's his vision. I think it's a testament to his good taste to end it now, rather than carry on and carry on and struggle to come up with new story lines and whatever happens with those shows that go on for a hundred years.

It's sometimes difficult to watch the show week after week, to see so much dysfunction and despair. The first four episodes of this season were especially bleak. How do you deal -- or did you deal -- with the intensity of the material? Was it ever difficult to click back into everyday life?

Well, working with this kind of subject matter is very difficult at times, but it's also kind of exhilarating as an actor to get to deal with the big issues -- death, love and life. So for me it was exciting when I had to work with material that was very sad and dramatic. But there were things that we did this year, especially toward the end of the season, that nearly killed us all -- it was very exhausting and very intense, but somehow it made sense to have it get very difficult and very taxing and really exhausting and tiring and challenging as it ended. And that made it very painful to leave.

But yeah, there have been things over the years that I've seen and done that when I think about it in retrospect, were very hard.

Like what?

My character wasn't involved in the family business, so I wasn't dealing with all the gore and the bodies and all that. But just the moments that I did come up against it, I'd have to try to make it normal. And it does become normal, because you see it every day, just like the characters do. There was this one funny moment, I think it was last year, where blood started coming up out of the sink where I had just put my cereal bowl. That was pretty horrifying -- but also really funny and kind of a good memory now that I look back at it.

Was it ever hard to play a character that was younger than you?

The biggest difference between Claire and myself is the age, not that there's such a huge age discrepancy. I'm 27 and Claire is about five years younger than I am. It was the perfect age gap between the character and myself, because it was close enough that I could really remember what it was like to be her age.

Do you see yourself in Claire at all, or are you two very different?

I can relate to Claire's relationship with her artwork. Since I work in a creative field I've had similar struggles about whether I can do this, or should do this, and if I will be able to do this -- all of that is resonant to anyone working in a creative field.

What about her angst and her sarcasm? Claire always has the wittiest comebacks.

It's so convenient when Alan Ball pens your quips! People always say, "Claire is so me." It's funny how people like to think of themselves as clever -- as do I. I wish I could be as funny as Claire.

I think a lot of Claire's edge comes from growing up in the environment that she did, with the family she did. She was sort of an afterthought. Her brothers were practically adults when she was born. She was fairly neglected because the business was more important than parenting the last child; she developed an interesting perspective on life because of that.

To me, one of the most interesting relationships on the show is between Claire and her mother, Ruth. They do this dance, one that I think is very specific to mothers and daughters. They do battle with one another -- this season, Ruth is furious at Claire for dropping out of school -- but then they always come back together, slowly and deliberately. They need each other, but they don't want to admit it.

For me too, it's been my favorite ongoing thread, that mother-daughter dynamic, because I think it's very real. What makes it so real -- and this is a testament to the writing -- is that they're both flawed and the progress they make in their relationship stalls. They don't continue to heal or move forward. They make a little progress and then revert backwards. Claire acts like she's 12 but wants to be treated like an adult. Claire is flawed and yet struggling to be noble and do the right thing -- she wants to figure out what her life is about.

I always looked forward to doing scenes with Frances [Conroy] -- who is one of the greatest actresses to ever live -- in the kitchen. The kitchen was sort of a touchstone: We would always go back there. No matter what tangents our characters would being go off on and/or what wild experiences Claire would have with this boyfriend or that boyfriend or whatever, we'd come back to the kitchen and it would sort of be like, oh, OK, this is who I am, this is where we started.

You got married when you were 23. What it's been like to be settled in your 20s at a time when most people your age, Claire included, are experimenting with their identities and hopping from one relationship to the next?

Well, it's been my experience, so I can't really compare it fairly. I just met the right person, and I really can't imagine my life being any different or any better.

Claire's relationships with men have been sort of disastrous. As a viewer, there have been so many times -- especially with Gabe and Olivier, but Russell and Billy too -- where I just wanted to pause the scene, step onto the set, and shake Claire, and say "What are you doing? You're too smart to be falling for this shit!"

Yeah, that was actually frustrating for me at times. And sometimes I had the same impulse you describe, but I tried not to focus on that and just play this other person. Having her go from one boyfriend to the next was boring for me at times. But television is so bizarre -- it's such a strange little medium, for a drama especially, because the writers are trying to come up with story lines that are interesting and will keep people coming back and the actors want it to be totally organic. But that would mean you might have an hour of people eating breakfast, which would be a drag. So there has to be some kind of middle ground, and it becomes the actors' job to smooth out any inconsistencies and follow the trajectory that is handed us and just make it work.

That's actually been a really fun challenge, once I melted into it and succumbed to it, rather than being like, "Oh my god! What are you doing?" I guess the control freak part of me was like, "Where is this going? What are we doing?" but then after a few years of that, it was like, "Oh, who cares, that's the job -- if it doesn't make sense, figure it out." Unless something was really glaring, and if something really didn't make sense, it was always a really nice collaborative environment, and no one would bristle or be upset if there were questions asked or anything.

You looked very different at the beginning of this season. Have you lost a lot of weight?

I lost a few pounds, nothing dramatic, but even my friends are like, "You look totally 'ano.'" I think it just showed up in my face. When we were on hiatus I did a Sam Shepard play, "Buried Child," in London at the National Theatre, and I was just working, working every night and working onstage and walking, and I think I just burned a lot more calories than I do in L.A. Also, the food in London was really bad. I didn't want to eat it, so I was cooking for myself and eating really healthy stuff like salads and chicken breasts, and I felt good. I'm also contrary by nature, and so when I'm in London seeing people shove candy bars in their mouths and smoking millions of cigarettes, it makes me want to be really healthy. But in L.A. all I want to do is go to In-N-Out Burger.

Does being in Hollywood -- and having the pressure to look a certain way, to be thin and flawless -- ever mess with your head?

When I was a lot younger, I was out here doing a screen test for "Can't Hardly Wait." It was a hard job to get and I was up against all these other actresses, but I got it. One day we were rehearsing, and the director came in and told me they wanted to get me a trainer. And I thought, "Oh, fuck, I'm getting fired, they want to get me an acting coach! I can't believe this! What I am I going to do?" I said, "I haven't gotten much direction, but if you can just tell me what you want, I'm sure I can adjust the character..." An exercise trainer was just the last thing on my mind. So they got me some trainer and I said, "Oh yeah, yeah, I'll do that" but kind of ignored it.

So you didn't do it?

Yeah, I mean I was really skinny then, too. I just have a baby face. Some of these girls now are really emaciated -- it's an epidemic. But I'm Italian. I love food; it's a point of joy in my life. I love eating and cooking for others and eating with them, and my dad is a cook, so I have a pretty good relationship with food.

So, the name of this column is Scene Stealer. If you had to pick one scene in all five seasons of "Six Feet Under" that you think you really nailed, or stole, what would it be?

Well, there's some stuff coming up at the end of the series that I'm really proud of. But the first thing that comes to mind are the fantasy numbers because they're just so outrageous and fun, and getting to sing and go into a recording studio and record the music and then do the choreography and then lip sync -- it's like making a little music video. And then there's one scene in the first season, an episode that Kathy Bates directed of me and Peter Krause [Nate] that she just let us do in the master. I was upset about some boyfriend and it was an emotional scene about my father's death, and instead of going in for the traditional coverage, she just let it play as a two-shot, let it play in the master, and that was pretty rewarding. It's like a play -- it couldn't be fiddled with, couldn't be edited -- that was all we shot. It was pretty cool.

Has working around death for all these years made you think about your own death at all -- and what you might want done to your body when you die?

I'm not interested in being embalmed and set out on display. I think the Jews have it right, you know, stick 'em in the ground. But we learned about this kind of funeral process: It's a "green" funeral. You're buried in this very idyllic setting -- sort like a park -- and there aren't markers and there aren't even coffins. You're just in a shroud, a beautiful shroud. I'm not really interested in being pumped full of chemicals and painted with salmon-colored lipstick.

So what's next for you now that the show is over?

I'm going to go to my little house in New England to chill out for a while. I was going to do a play, but the last episode ended up being so enormous and cut into rehearsals so badly that I had to drop out of it, which was fine. It was worth it to have this really cool, enormous final episode

Are loose ends going to be tied up, or is a lot going to be left to our imagination?

Kind of both. I mean, there ain't going to be a reunion.
